W. K. Stanton

Walter Kendall Stanton (29 September 1891, Dauntsey, Wiltshire – 30 June 1978, Sedgehill, Shaftesbury, Dorset) was an important English organist and composer of sacred music. At Salisbury Cathedral he was a chorister. Subsequently he was educated at Lancing College and then Merton College, Oxford, where he served as organ scholar (1909 to 1913). He served various schools as Director of Music: St Edward's School, Oxford (1915–1924); Wellington College (1924–1937); Reading University (1927–1937); the Midland Region of the BBC (1937–1945); and Professor of Music at Bristol University (1947–1958).
Stanton composed mostly choral music, including almost 50 hymn tunes and numerous choral anthems, several of which have become standard church choir fare.
